Where We Come From: The Family Tree Project

A Family Coat of Arms

For thousands of years, names and images have been associated with and taken to represent the stories of different families. Following in this tradition, you will draw/create a family coat of arms to represent you and your immediate family. You will study the traditions of family crests (Coat of Arms) and create symbolic representations of you and your family.
Your crest must begin with a shield, divided into three to eight fields. It also must include (but is not limited to):
  1. your Surname (this is the last name that your family goes by);
  2. the flags of the countries of your family's origins (they must be outside your shield);
  3. at least three objects which represent your immediate family (or beyond) or have significance for your family story;
  4. a family motto - three words to describe/define your family's best qualities (see below) or a saying that is important to your family.
You may add: a helm, supporters, banners, a crest, or other accoutrement to personalize your Coat of Arms.
You are also responsible for writing a page of explanations of the images, symbols and words you choose.
